Chatswood’s a Trip Through Time and Space for Vivid Sydney 2018
Over three weeks, Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas, will transform the Chatswood CBD for the fourth year in a row, with immersive projections using NASA imagery and interactive light installations.
Vivid Sydney at Chatswood’s Lightscape, an eclectic celebration of food, fashion, light, the planet and the cosmos, will run every evening from 5.30pm - 10.30pm, from the 25th of May until the 16th June.
“The community is excited to see Vivid Sydney return to Chatswood,” said Willoughby City Council Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney. “What makes Chatswood unique is that each year the precinct is designed as a continuous walk to take you on a sensory journey starting at the Chatswood Interchange through to ending at the Chatswood Chase. The precinct is family-friendly with a special daytime exhibition of wearable art and a light walk that is fully accessible for prams and wheelchairs.”
Visitors can start their journey at the Sky Portal at Chatswood Interchange, where a giant overhanging interactive screen transports audiences below to amazing global locations using green screen technology.
Then there’s the Light Market, a pop-up market offering a fantastic array of international cuisines. The Light Market, designed by the creator of Adelaide Festival’s famed Barrio precinct, is built from scaffold and recycled materials and lit by lasers, inspired by the favelas of Brazil and Star Wars. A quirky, delicious experience, Light Market is dotted with playful light installations for kids and big kids.
Next stop is the Future Scape, an outer space voyage through the stars and planets at The Concourse. Using NASA’s amazing imagery and 360 degree projections, Future Scape takes audiences on a deep, immersive dive into the universe where they can imagine life on Mars or find themselves in the middle of a black hole. In an addition, on the weekends artists will create their vision of Life in 2050 in live art sessions, projected live on to the Anderson St facade of The Concourse.
Finally, visitors will discover breathtakingly unconventional costumes at the World of WearableArt Exhibition at Chatswood Chase. Combining light, art and technology these fashion garments are designed by artists and architects from around the world, and will be a hit with the fashionistas.
Throughout Vivid Sydney at Chatswood, visitors are invited to enjoy great shopping, dining and market stalls and wander through the CBD, including The District which is known as a hotspot for Asian dining experiences.
Vivid Sydney in Chatswood is run by Willoughby City Council and supported by Precinct Contributors Chatswood Interchange, Chatswood Chase Sydney and Westfield Chatswood. The Chatswood precinct is created by Bluebottle, Modelbox Design, Sydney University and Amigo & Amigo.
Just like last year, Vivid Sydney at Chatswood will run on 100% Greenpower as part of Willoughby City Council’s commitment to sustainability. The dazzling installations of Lightscape will be powered by the council’s solar farm, located above Chatswood’s CBF at the Albert Avenue car park. In addition to the renewable energy already produced by the council, more than 14MWh of power has been offset for Vivid Sydney at Chatswood through NSW wind power, keeping more than 14 tonnes of emissions out of the atmosphere.
Vivid Sydney at Chatswood and is suitable for all ages and families. Chatswood is one of the precincts for Vivid Sydney, an annual 23-day festival of light, music and ideas, which is owned, managed and produced by Destination NSW, the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency.
