Is Your Airbag Safe?
Help is at hand: A new website will now tell you in seconds.
According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) there are currently around 1,600,000 cars on Australian roads that are still to be fixed; with approximately 19,000 of those having the "Alpha" airbag, which could prove deadly.
If your car is fitted with the faulty Takata airbag inflators, it should not be driven. The faulty inflators can rupture on impact sending metal fragments into the vehicle. These 19,000 vehicles in Australia need to have their airbag inflators replaced urgently for the safety of their passengers.
In NSW, the figures for cars requiring replacement of the airbags are shocking: 448,237 (including 5,174 alpha airbags). (Source: ACCC)
Until now, it has been difficult to determine exactly which makes and models are included.
The Australian car industry, led by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, has recently grouped together to create a website for car owners to quickly and easily check whether your car is affected by the recall.
The website is available now and is also being promoted by the “Don’t Die Wondering” advertising campaign.
All you need to do is visit the "Is My Airbag Safe" website and enter your registration number and state, to see whether your car is affected by the recall. You can also check on family and friends cars by entering their registration number.
The new, easy to use website has been created after criticism from the ACCC that the car industry was not doing enough to address the problem.
It is vital that drivers don’t underestimate the seriousness of the recall.
