Volunteers from Lugarno Lions Club set sail for a good cause on the weekend as part of a Sailability day at Kogarah Bay.

Sailability, a non-profit organisation, provides sailing and boating for people of all ages with a disability.

The group of Lions volunteers are long-time supporters of the program. They arranged for the participants to attend and hosted a special BBQ for Sailability volunteers and attendees on Saturday.

Georges River Mayor Kevin Greene attended the event and acknowledged the excellent work of the local volunteers and the importance of the Sailability program.

“Sailability is a wonderful initiative and an important one to support. From the dedicated volunteers taking the excited participants sailing to the Lugarno Lions Club providing a delicious BBQ it’s great to see so many people in our community getting involved,” says Georges River Mayor Kevin Greene.

Lions Past District Governor and Lugarno Lions Club member Elvio Munzone says Lions is a proud supporter of Sailabilty.

“At Lions we create miracles through service and that’s exactly what the Sailability program does. As Summer approaches many of us will have the opportunity to enjoy Sydney’s beautiful beaches and bays. For others this can be a challenge, but disability is not an obstacle with Sailability. The program provides people with a disabilitythe opportunity to get out on the water, feel the wind in their hair and enjoy all that sailing has to offer,” says Elvio Munzone.

Elvio Munzone presented recognition certificates to two Sailability volunteers, Peter Hogan and Norma Courtney on behalf of Lugarno Lions, acknowledging their hard work and dedication to the community over the years.

Peter Hogan, treasurer and volunteer sailor at Sailability thanked Lugarno Lions for its ongoing support.

"Our program runs entirely on the dedication and hard work of our volunteers and  the support of people in our community. We are so grateful for the ongoing support from Lions. In addition to coming along and hosting a special BBQ for us each year, Lugarno Lions Club has provided incredible support for us over the years including purchasing a new Access 303 Sailing Dinghy which we regularly use in our program” says Peter.

In addition to the thousands of local community service and support projects each year, Lions support a range of other major research projects and support programs including medical research, environment work and emergency disaster relief. Some Lions foundations include Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation, Lions Eye Health Program, Lions Hearing Dogs, Australian Lions Drug Awareness Foundation.

100 per cent of funds donated to Lions go towards funding Lions projects.
