Love, Loss, War and PTSD: World Premiere Season for New Australian Play
New Australian Play Fitson and Dan by Kate O'Brien and Mark O'Flynn
And starring two North Shore actors...
World Premiere Season at the Flight Path Theatre, Marrickville 22 April – 2 May
A beautiful monologue by a little known dead Australian writer and a new work - inspired by her love -
come together in a romantic, dramatic new adaptation at the Flight Path Theatre this April.
Miss Fitson is an independent, free-thinking teacher and communist, reflecting on her life in pre- and post-war Sydney. Dan a larrikin plunged reluctantly into war. Together they try and make a future.
Fitson and Dan is distinctly Australian with an equal measure of iconic humour and great depths of sadness. This poetic love story of the times comes to a shattering conclusion you won’t want to miss!
The play came about through the blending of two plays. Director Felicity Burke (of Cobbity) takes up the story:
“Little known Australian writer, Kate O’Brien (now deceased) wrote a beautiful monologue, “Our Miss Fitson” - about a sensitive, intelligent woman in wartime Sydney. The references to her love, Dan - and the brief description of how she ‘lost him to war’ - were tantalizing.
“Janine Penfold (Chatswood) and I thought how wonderful it would be if we could hear Dan’s story too! Celebrated Blue Mountains writer Mark O’Flynn (Leura) was commissioned to bring Dan’s story to life as a companion piece. In “Dan” the character emerged as a funny young editor and part time bookie’s penciller plunged reluctantly into war. His life as a POW and subsequent post-traumatic stress reflects the experience of so many returned servicemen.
“Reading the two pieces it was clear they must be intertwined into a cohesive work; Mark generously agreed to let me edit and - voila - a play was born!”
Producer and co-star Janine says what emerged surprised them both with its poetic quality and the richness of the love story. “At subsequent professional workshops, audiences were struck by the distinctly Australian humour, the great depths of sadness and the single voice which surfaced to tell in delicate detail the romantic, tragic story of Miss Fitson and Dan.”
The world premiere season of Fitson and Dan opens at the Flight Path Theatre in Marrickville on 22 April and stars Janine Penfold (Chatswood) as Miss Fitson with Leofric Kingsford-Smith (Wahroonga) as Dan. With voice character played by Lisa Gorman (North Ryde). It plays Wednesday to Saturday at 7.30pm with special midweek and weekend matinees.
