Resilience and Determination of Sydney Volunteers Continues to Shine

From droughts and bushfires to the spread of COVID-19, it’s been a challenging year, but the resilience and determination of local volunteers continues to shine.

Whilst recent government regulation and social distancing measures has impacted how many organisations operate, some volunteers continue to go above and beyond to do what they can to make a difference.

Local Lion Elvio Munzone has been volunteering for over 30 years now and through rain, hail, shine and even COVID-19 he continues to help others in the community.

In the past month, Elvio has led several projects and says it’s times like these that kindness matters most.

“Whist the current situation has had a significant impact on how volunteers and community service organisations operate, kindness matters now more than ever, ” says Elvio Munzone.

“Lions Clubs are groups of volunteers in the community that come together to help others and make a difference. We create miracles every day through our service.  It’s been wonderful to see our clubs adapting to these difficult times.  From virtual meetings and fundraising to assisting those more vulnerable members of the community, Lions continue to work together to support each other and those in need.”

“I’m a member of Lugarno Lions Club and each year at Easter we deliver chocolates to residents of local nursing homes. Unfortunately we couldn’t deliver these to residents in person this year, but we still provided over 500 chocolates to four local nursing homes with an Easter message from Lions.”

“We have also saved hundreds of books from landfill and this week it was a pleasure to donate a great selection of children’s and teenage books, including educational books to local charity Caring Kids. Caring Kids’ Toy Boxes are designed to help kids caring for a family member with a disability or illness to learn, play and read.”

“My wife Gae, also a Lion, has been working hard with a couple of other volunteers and have spent hundreds of hours stitching together beautiful bags with a koala design to raise money for Cobargo Wildlife Sanctuary which was destroyed in the recent bushfires.”

“There are so many ways Lions volunteers are continuing to make a difference in this challenging time. It’s also showcased the many benefits of being part of an organisation like Lions. Some clubs who are unable to continue their community service are finding ways to keep in touch and meet virtually as Lions are not only fellow volunteers, but have also become great friends.”

“For anyone who is interested in meeting likeminded people and making a difference, we encourage them to consider joining their local Lions Club,” adds Elvio.

The health crisis comes as many Australian communities attempt to get back on their feet after the recent and tragic bushfire crisis. Lions were amongst the first to offer relief to those impacted by the bushfires and the organisation continues to support communities in their recovery.

Over the past year, the 1300 clubs across Australia have mobilised to support those impacted by the bushfires and with Australia’s help over $2.5 million was raised in the Australian Lions Foundation National Appeal. Over $1.5m has already been distributed to affected communities.

Lions in Australia are also being supported by the strength of the International Lions organisation with over US$340,000 in financial support already committed from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) which mobilises quickly to support Lions Clubs in major disasters all over the world.
