SIR CHRIS BONINGTON: Britain’s Greatest Mountaineer Set To Visit Australia

Exclusive Australian Event on Thursday, February 15th, 2018: Film Premiere & Live Onstage Interview

Chris Bonington is coming to Australia to introduce the Australian premiere of his new award winning film ‘Bonington Mountaineer – My Life Story,’ a spectacular and deeply personal film that headlined the Banff Mountain Film Festival in Canada in late 2017.

Chris will then be interviewed onstage by ‘Jonesy’ Justin Jones, the well known Australian adventurer who in 2012 crossed Antarctica with his best mate James Castrission.

Australian climbers, trekkers, as well as armchair adventurers have previously enjoyed several sold out lecture tours by Chris, but this is his first event back in Australia for several years.

Joe Bonington, Chris’s son, is the owner of Joe’s Basecamp located at Sydney’s Northern Beaches and he is hosting this special event, as a fundraiser for the Australian Himalayan Foundation, which Joe is a proud Ambassador of.

At the February 15th event Chris will also be signing copies of his new best-selling autobiography ‘Ascent’ which was released by Simon & Schuster in October last year.

'These well chronicled chapters of Chris’s life read like the pages of an epic saga with all the battle and victory, triumph and tragedy, love and loss one would expect of a mythical hero.' - Leo Houlding (British rock climber & Everest summiteer)

Chris Bonington was recently described by ‘The Times’ of London as ‘the David Attenborough of mountaineering’. Now aged 83 Chris is England’s most celebrated mountaineer who since the age of 16 has climbed the world’s highest peaks including scaling Mount Everest in 1985 at the age of 50.

Chris had led over 19 expeditions to the Himalayas, (including four to Everest & the first ascent of the South Face of Annapurna 1970). He is also the author of more than a dozen books recording his relentless quest for adventure.

Most Australians first came to know about Chris Bonington’s adventures in 1976 when he led the legendary ‘Everest the Hard Way’ expedition. The best-selling book and film that followed recorded the first British ascent of Mount Everest (by Doug Scott and Dougal Haston) via the South West face.

This up-coming event will not only be about Chris’s astonishing record, as both a mountaineer and leader of expeditions. It will also reveal his devastation at losing more than a dozen close friends, as well as the many near misses he survived including the legendary ‘Crawl down the Ogre’ with Doug Scott in Pakistan’s Karakorum in 1977. He also discusses the huge personal toll on his family life as he juggled his ambition and relentless passion for climbing with raising a family.

Not many people know that Chris also has a special link with Australia in that his late father Charles Bonington took off to Australia when Chris was still an infant and he later became a founding member of the SAS. Chris barely heard from him ‘until he became famous’, although they finally did resume a cordial friendship.

In 2014 at the age of 80 Chris celebrated his birthday by climbing the Old Man of Hoy (damaging a couple of discs in the process!) a gigantic sea stack that rises straight out of the sea at 130 metres off the North coast of Scotland.

On Thursday, February 15th the Sydney audience are in for a rare and candid insight into the life of this astonishing adventurer who continues to excite and inspire the next generation.
