GEO-ENGINEERING: MESSING WITH THE CLIMATE TO UNDO OUR CURRENT MESS

When:
Wed 23 May 2018
Cost:
FREE
Details:
The increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is trapping more and more of the Earth’s outgoing infrared radiation, creating an imbalance between the inflow and outflow of energy. Our planet’s natural response to this “radiative forcing” is an increase in temperature: climate change.

If we do not like these changes, there are two things we might try to do. Ideally we would try to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but that is easier said than done. Alternately we could re-establish the energy balance by blocking some of the incoming sunlight.

Join Associate Professor Micheal Box as he poses the questions – is Geo-Engineering something we should do? And if so, what might be the consequences?
