MET Concert #3: Serenade

Sat 09 Jun 2018
On June 9th, The Metropolitan Orchestra with Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Sarah-Grace Williams return to the enchanting Independent Theatre for a musical evening with a difference. Sarah-Grace and TMO will start the performance with Josef Suk’s sublime Serenade for strings. They will then be joined by outstanding Australian tenor Daniel Belle for the second half of this gala concert which will include some of the greatest arias from Opera and Music Theatre.

Josef Suk was an accomplished violinist who studied at the Prague Conservatory and performed most notably in the Bohemian String Quartet and then become a violin professor at the Prague Conservatory providing him with a familiarity with string instruments to give him the skill to compose the Serenade for Strings in E flat major in 1892. While Suk was studying under Antonín Dvořák at the Prague Conservatory, Dvořák noticed a melancholy strain in much of Suk's music, and recommended he write some lighter and more cheerful music. Based on Dvořák's suggestion, Suk produced a serenade for strings which brought Suk considerable fame with Dvořák's longtime supporter, Johannes Brahms, also endorsing its publication.

“Met Concert 3 is something a little bit different for our Met Concert Series. This wonderfully varied program includes Suk’s sunny string Serenade which is not a work you hear everyday, yet it has been something we’ve been wanting to perform for some time. Our musicians, along with myself are really looking forward to sharing this outstanding work,” said Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams.

The second half of this concert notes an interesting diversion for TMO who will highlight voice for the second time in this year’s Met Series. Daniel Belle has achieved significant acclaim as one of the finest voices in the Australian Music Theatre industry most recently seen covering the role of Jean Valjean in the Australian production of Les Misérables. He has performed with the internationally praised ‘Ten Tenors’ throughout Australia, Europe and The United States with whom he has also appeared on several albums. As a solo vocalist, Daniel has performed for a number of major events including the Sydney Olympic Games, the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI, Rugby Union Bledisloe Cup and Lions tours, and the International Cricket finals. He has performed as a soloist at the Sydney Opera House, ACER Arena, Sydney Olympic Stadium and the Sydney Cricket Ground, in addition to featuring at Sydney’s Carols in the Domain and Carols by Candlelight in Melbourne. Tonight will be his first performance in a mainstage Met Concert with TMO.

“It’s so great to again feature our Daniel Belle with TMO. We’ve been long time supporters of his tremendous talent and have enjoyed watching his incredible career flourish. To have him perform with our superb string section will guarantee a spine tingling second half to our third Met Concert of this year,” said Williams.
