Willoughby Symphony Orchestra’s last subscription concert for 2018 Discovery will see the inimitable Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Dr Nicholas Milton AM join two of Australia’s most accomplished musicians, irresistible violinist Dimity Hall and phenomenal cellist Julian Smiles.

Now Sydney locals, the husband-wife duo is well known to national and international audiences as founders of the Goldner String Quartet and current members of the Australia Ensemble @UNSW. Both Dimity and Julian previously held principle positions with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and for over ten years have performed yearly as guest musicians in the semi-finals of the Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia.

The concert will open with Composer-in-Residence Nigel Westlake’s Cudmirrah Fanfare, well familiar to listeners of the ABC’s Radio National for which it served as the official greeting for many years.

Subsequently Dimity and Julian will perform Brahms’ unique Concerto for Violin and Cello. This performance will transfix you with its exquisite grandeur as magical melodies weave their way between the two instruments in an astonishingly supple music conversation.

In a dramatic conclusion to the 2018 series, Dvořák’s New World Symphony comes to effervescent life in the incredible Concert Hall at The Concourse. Dvořák’s expedition through such diverse musical cultures reveals countless variations of tone and style nimbly juxtaposed in an amazingly unified symphonic entity.
