"★★★★ - A world where the past is ever-present and music knows no borders."

After a few years away Brisbane based band MZAZA returns to Sydney to put on a long-anticipated concert at Staves Brewery on Saturday 22 of February.

MZAZA deliver Balkan-French sounds to vodka-drinking, sophisticated folk lovers around the world. Lead by enchanting French-Sephardic vocalist Pauline Maudy, these eclectic musicians from Bosnia, Latvia, Greece, France and Australia play rhythms and melodies that tap into the beating heart of humankind.

The group has recently been announced as a finalist in the Queensland Music Awards for the fourth time. They brought home the award for best World song in 2015 and 2016 for tracks from their album Ghosts (2015). This year's selected song, The Birth and Death of Stars, is from their album of the same name that the band recorded in Greece while on a European tour and is preparing to release this year.

The impressive musicianship of MZAZA – deftly realised with accordion, violin, percussion, double bass and Flamenco guitar – embraces diversity and fuels an intense live show, an unforgettable musical journey, that has enraptured audiences at festivals internationally.

For their show at Staves MZAZA are joined by dear friends and talented musicians Laura & Susie. Laura & Susie are sisters from Sydney whose songs draw on the Celtic and Americana folk music from their childhood. Accordion, piano, violin and guitar create a backdrop for their beautiful vocal harmonies. Laura’s piano compositions range from the epic to the light-hearted, influenced by artists like Joanna Newsom and Tori Amos, complemented by the spellbinding simplicity of Susie’s gentle folk melodies on guitar, inspired by great songstresses such as Joni Mitchell and Kate Rusby.
