Details:
This International Women’s Day, join documentary filmmaker and local Rozelle mum Mihaal Danziger at the Sydney premiere of her new film, A Certain Mother.
The film follows a day in the lives of four Australian women; Leticia, Barb, Megan and Louise as they navigate parenthood. It takes an intimate look at issues around mental health, post-natal depression, body image, feminism, identity, and disability.
Leticia: hikes hand in hand with her son Wade, an adorable, dreamy, loving, and funny seven-year-old who has Down Syndrome. Leticia describes the roller-coaster journey of receiving the diagnosis, followed by grief, then emerging the other side to embrace this unexpected twist of fate. “People are shocked that I’m happy, and I just wish that wasn’t the starting point.”
Barb: a mother, grandmother, foster mother and adoptive mother, spends the day with her tribe of seven children. “They’ve got no one to defend them, therefore you have to do it. You’re their voice. To me that defines a mother, a parent.”
Megan: explores her long battle with postnatal depression and anxiety, challenging many preconceptions along the way. “I felt like I was tricking everybody. They looked at me and thought I was doing motherhood so well, but actually, what’s been told inside my head is a whole different narrative.”
Louise: lays bare her struggles with negative body image and sets out what she plans to do differently with her own daughters. “The dislike of larger people is a real thing. And it’s not a fair thing, but I can’t tell her it’s not a real thing.”
A Certain Mother was nominated for Best Emerging Director at Melbourne Documentary Film Festival.
Mihaal says: “For many mums, International Women’s Day will pass barely noticed in the relentless whirl of everyday life; babies, kids, family, school, paid work, unpaid work, not to mention the mental load – every hour filled, every braincell used. Motherhood is relentless and when every child comes with their own unique set of challenges, parenthood can also be lonely. It was this that led me to explore other mothers’ lives in my new film.”
